Laser engraved vs. printed cutting boards
Two ways to personalise a board. Here is which one is worth choosing for a gift.
The short answer
Choose a laser-engraved board for anything meant to last, such as a wedding gift, a closing gift, a service award or a family recipe, because the design is burned into the wood and cannot wash or peel off. Printed boards put ink or a decal on the surface, which suits short-lived promotions. Custom Engraved Cutting Boards makes laser-engraved boards. See wedding and anniversary boards.
Side by side
| Printed | Laser engraved | |
|---|---|---|
| How the mark is made | Ink or a decal applied on top of the surface | Burned into the wood grain by laser |
| Durability | Can wear, scratch or lift with washing and knife use | Does not peel, flake or wash off, and ages with the board |
| On the cutting surface | A coating sits on the wood | No ink, vinyl or decal, just a food-safe mineral-oil finish |
| Look | Colour is possible | A burned, one-tone mark whose contrast depends on the wood |
| Fine detail and handwriting | Depends on the print method | Traced stroke for stroke, clearest on pale wood such as maple |
| Best for | Short-lived promotions | Gifts, awards, weddings and keepsakes meant to last |
| What we make | Not what we do | Laser-engraved hardwood boards |
Why engraving lasts
Laser engraving burns the design into the grain itself, so there is no ink, vinyl or decal on the cutting surface and nothing to peel or fade. The mark seasons along with the board. Hand washing and a little mineral oil are all it needs, and our care guide explains how to keep it sharp. A board should never go in the dishwasher, whatever the personalisation.
How the wood changes the result
A burned engraving shows as a dark mark, so the wood sets the contrast. Maple is pale and even, which makes a crisp monogram or traced handwriting stand out, while walnut is darker and gives a softer tone-on-tone look that suits bold, simple designs. Choosing wood for an engraved cutting board compares maple, walnut, cherry and bamboo, and recipe and handwriting boards show fine detail at its best.
When printing might still make sense
If a board is a short-lived promotional item and full colour matters more than longevity, a printed surface can do the job, although it will not wear in the way an engraving does. For a gift or an award people will use and display for years, engraving is the better fit.
The verdict
Pick laser engraving for gifts, awards, weddings and keepsakes meant to last.
Pick printing only for short-lived promotions where colour matters most.
